Launch of AP Anna Canteen Scheme 2024-25

After being re-elected to power, CM Chandrababu Naidu has reintroduced Anna Canteen Scheme on the occassion of Independence Day (15th August 2024). The Chief Minister felt that the Rs. 5 per meal being supplied at the Anna Canteens is of great help for the poor, the daily wage earners. "What more satisfaction do you have than filling the empty stomachs of the poor," Chandrababu Naidu remarked. Chandrababu and his wife, Nara Bhuvaneswari, had their meal along with common citizens after declaring the Anna Canteen opened at Gudivada. He said an action plan will be formulated to run these canteens on a permanent basis and without any hurdles.

Anna Canteens are named after the former chief minister and TDP founder, NT Rama Rao, who was fondly called Anna (elder brother). The TDP government is going to provide buildings and clean water for the 203 canteens. TDP general secretary, Nara Lokesh, said the canteens were closed only for political reasons. He added that hunger doesn't know politics. He asked whether the poor should go hungry for any political vendetta. Now AP state govt. has reopened Anna canteens for the welfare of poor people. The Chief Minister said that the total expenditure for maintaining these canteens is Rs. 53 lakh per day.

"I have taken up various programmes, but I really feel happy to inaugurate such a great scheme like Anna Canteen, particularly on the occasion of Independence Day," Chandrababu mentioned. Recalling that he had launched the Anna Canteen in Gudivada itself when NT Rama Rao became the chief minister for the first time, Chandrababu said that he had personally come here to relaunch the canteen as the TDP-led NDA government has taken the decision that no one should go hungry in a place where the late NTR was born.

Recalling the great services of the late Dokka Seethamma, who served food to whoever had come to her feeling hungry, he said that this is the reason why Dokka Seethamma remains in the hearts of the people permanently. Stating that 100 Anna canteens were relaunched on 15th August 2024, Chandrababu said that by the end of September, 203 such canteens would be reopened across the state, including in tribal areas. About 350 people will be served food in each canteen and the number will increase depending on how the people receive it, he added. "We are going to spend Rs. 200 crore per annum for the maintenance of these canteens," the Chief Minister said, asking why the previous government had closed these canteens.

Background of Anna Canteen Scheme

NTR Anna Canteen Scheme was firstly launched in the year 2016 under the previous Telugu Desam Party (TDP) rule. The first such canteen was started on a pilot basis in Amaravati in June 2016. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were provided to the poor people at nominal price of Rs. 5 per meal which means only Rs. 15 in total for 3 times food in a day. Then under the rule of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, this scheme was stopped after the contract of a non-governmental organisational (NGO) running Anna Canteen was not renewed.

The closure comes two months after Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP lost power to arch rival, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in the year 2019. Akshaya Patra Foundation, the NGO, cooked and supplied food to 200-odd Anna Canteens across the state. Their contract came to an end and there was no communication from the new government to continue further. So, the NGO stopped the food supply and surrendered all the material to municipal corporations.
