Gujarat government has announced to start implementation of Namo Saraswati Yojana 2024 soon. With a provision of Rs. 250 crore, Namo Saraswati Yojana scholarship aims to incentivise increased enrolment in subjects related to STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics). Under the 'Namo Lakshmi Yojana', the government will provide Rs. 50,000 over a period of four years to girls wanting to take admission in Classes 9 to 12 for the academic year 2024-25. This scheme is applicable to girls whose family income is less than Rs. 6 lakh per annum, said the release.
The beneficiary students, after securing admission in Class 9, will receive Rs 500 per month for 10 months each year, and the remaining Rs 10,000 will be disbursed after they pass the Class 10 board exam, it said. Students in Classes 11 and 12 will receive Rs 750 per month for 10 months each year, and Rs 15,000 will be given after they clear the Class 12 board exam, the release said. The scheme will cover girls studying in government, aided and private schools.
The 'Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana' aims to encourage students to opt for the science stream and excel in it, said the release. Students in Classes 11 and 12 who have opted for science will receive Rs. 1,000 per month for 10 months, totalling Rs. 20,000 over two years, and the remaining Rs. 5,000 will be disbursed after they pass the Class 12 board exam.
The aid amount under both the schemes for June and July months will be credited to the bank account of the student's mother or the pupil's own account through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer), said the release.
While presenting Gujarat Budget 2024-25, Finance Minister said "The 21st century is an age of science and technology in which IT and associated technologies touch all aspects of life. New opportunities are also opening up in high-value jobs in technology-related sectors, for which, Science education (STEM) is critical. To incentivise increased enrolment in STEM subjects, I propose the Namo Saraswati scheme".FM added "Under this scholarship scheme, students enrolling in the science stream in higher secondary schools (from low and middle-income households) will be assisted with Rs. 10,000 annually while studying in class 11 and Rs. 15,000 while studying in class 12. This assistance of Rs. 25,000 over two years to students is expected to increase the number of students enrolled in science subjects from 2 lakh to 5 lakh annually over the next five years".
Under the scheme, a student who clears the Class 10 board examination with more than 50% marks will get a total scholarship of Rs. 25,000 to take the science stream in Class 11-12 in affiliated schools of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB).
The budget for school education under the sector has also risen over the same period, with the current allocation more than double of that in the 2018-19 budget. The school education budget has increased from Rs. 23,897 crore to Rs. 49,295 crore in the past seven years.

Nearly 4.37 lakh girls have registered to avail benefits under two schemes launched by the Gujarat government in March to provide financial assistance to eligible female students from classes 9 to 12. While 4.03 lakh girl students have registered for the 'Namo Lakshmi Yojana', nearly 37,000 have enrolled for the 'Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana' as part of the 'Shala Praveshotsav - Kanya Kelavni Mahotsav 2024', an annual drive to enlist students in Class 1 in Gujarat, an official release said.Under the 'Namo Lakshmi Yojana', the government will provide Rs. 50,000 over a period of four years to girls wanting to take admission in Classes 9 to 12 for the academic year 2024-25. Amount Distribution under Namo Saraswati Scheme in Gujarat
Eligibility Criteria under Namo Saraswati Yojna
Students who have passed class 10 and taken Science stream in class 11-12 from government and aided schools will be eligible for scholarships irrespective of family income limit. However, students of private schools will be eligible for the scholarship, based on a family income limit of Rs 6 lakh.Integration of 3 Schemes in Namo Saraswati Merit Scholarship Scheme
"Students availing scholarships under Namo Lakshmi, Gyan Setu, and Gyan Sadhana Yojana will be eligible to get the benefit of Vigyan Sadhana Scholarship Yojana as an additional benefit," an education official stated. Along with this, all three merit scholarship schemes will be integrated under the Namo Saraswati Merit Scholarship Scheme. These are the:-- Chief Minister Gyan Setu Merit Scholarship Scheme for Class 6 to 12 students (2 lakh students),
- Chief Minister Gyan Sadhana Merit Scholarship Scheme for Class 9 to 12 students (1 lakh students), and
- CM Vigyan Sadhana Merit Scheme for Class 11-12 Science stream students (around 2 to 5 lakh students).
Meanwhile, the allocation for the education sector, comprising school, and higher and technical education, has seen a gradual rise over the past seven years. With Rs. 55,114 crore set aside for the sector, the allocation has nearly doubled from the Rs. 27,500 crore provisioned in the 2018-19 budget.
