On 1 February 2024, Finance minister presented Union Budget 2024-25 in which she said "Eighty-three lakh SHGs with nine crore women are transforming rural socio-economic landscape with empowerment and self-reliance. Their success has assisted nearly one crore women to become Lakhpati Didi already. They are an inspiration to others. Their achievements will be recognized through honouring them. Buoyed by the success, it has been decided to enhance the target for Lakhpati Didi from 2 crore to 3 crore".

Women led SHGs to Become Drone Operators in Lakhpati Didi Scheme

Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO) has tied up with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) training major Drone Destination to launch a special training programme for women under PM Modi’s "Lakhpati Didi Yojana". This programme aims to empower women-led self-help groups (SHGs) by turning them into skilled drone operators and entrepreneurs.

Drone Ki Udaan Initiative under Lakhpati Didi Yojana

Prime Minister Modi envisages that "Drone ki udaan will be carried out by thousands of women from SHGs who will be trained to operate as well as repair drones". Drone Destination said that under the lakhpati didi yojana, the government will provide drones to thousands of women members of 15,000 SHGs, and aim to create two crore lakhpati didi's in villages.

Kisan Drone Training to Women from SHGs

Drone Destination CEO said, "We are confident that drone technology will enable precision farming and open new avenues of income generation for our farmer community." The company has started "medium class certified kisan drone training" along with its partner Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA) in Gurugram, Phulpur and Gwalior. The recently trained over 60 women drone pilots will be licensed to fly kisan drones upto 50 Kg.

"Over the next year, Drone Destination is starting such training programs pan-India and intends to provide training to more than 10,000 women from self-help groups on various drone operations and maintenance courses," an official said. The Union aviation ministry had recently removed the requirement of having a passport to become a drone operator. Now anyone who has passed Class 10 and has an Aadhar Card and a valid secondary ID can enrol in a DGCA-Certified Drone Pilot Training Program.
