Need for Arogya Lakshmi Scheme in Telangana
ICDS implementation has resulted in improvement of nutritional status of women and children in Telangana state but the desired goals have not been achieved. Percentage of low birth weight babies, underweight children of less than 3 years of age and pregnant women who are anaemic is still high. So Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in Telangana are high.
Malnutrition starts early in life and its effects become irreversible after 2-3 years. So it is necessary to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant & lactating women. For this purpose, Telangana govt. has modified nutrition programme of ICDS especially as Take Home Ration (THR) provided to Pregnant and Lactating women under ICDS gets shared by all members of the family. Thus the state govt. is now implementing a new initiative namely Arogya Laxmi programme.
